Let them know that if their body was hurt they’d see a doctor, so it is no different when their mental health is hurt.

Encourage them to seek addiction treatment if necessary. If they are trying to bury their bad feelings in drugs and alcohol, professional treatment is necessary. Without professional help, both problems can worsen.
